Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Rebecca Loebe probably will permit you to categorize her music as “indie folk,” but playfully, she herself describes her oeuvre as “post-brontosaurus indie folk/crunk,” if only to make the whole labeling thing a bit more amusing.
In addition to genre naming, she tours. Lots. Last night, she played a gig in Rock Hill, South Carolina, of all places. Tonight, Tuesday, August 24, 2010, she plays The White Mule in Columbia, South Carolina. Tomorrow, she’ll play the Awendaw Barn Jam in Awendaw, South Carolina, and on October 1, she’ll play The Evening Muse in Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite all of this travel, she was kind enough to submit to a brief email interview as she makes her way to the Carolinas from Georgia. This week, she begins a mini-tour that will take her to a whole host of faraway states.
The interview begins as follows:
1. You have toured across the country. What do you enjoy most about performing in Georgia and the Carolinas?
The drive to the gigs is one of my favorite parts of playing down south. Kudzu, rolling hills, small towns, friendly folks everywhere … no matter where I’m traveling in the country, that’s what I’m expecting to see out my windshield, and down here, that’s what I get.
2. What is “post-brontosaurus indie folk/crunk”? How do you feel about labels?
I came up with that descriptor because I was tired of answering the genre question, so I wanted to come up with something quirky and silly and fun so that even if “indie/folk” doesn’t communicate much about my personality, at least the descriptor will make people smile (hopefully :-)).
3. With respect to your influences, what three albums are the most indispensable to you, and why?
Carole King, Tapestry. Joni Mitchell, Blue. Guster, Lost and Gone Forever.
4. You’re Internet savvy. How do you think it compares to be a touring musician now - with the existence of the Internet and social media - to how it was twenty years ago, before such technologies were available?
I can’t imagine touring 20 years years ago, without cell phones, GPS, email at my finger tips … not to mention the social media! This exponential increase in the power of consumer tech has changed the music industry in huge ways … namely, anyone can access the tools needed to record and release a great sounding record, meaning that there are more people who do it and audiences are much more familiar with the DIY indie approach to forging a music career. It also gives me the opportunity to share information, music and updates with the people I meet and everyone they know via social networking. I’m a fan!
5. What on the immediate horizon for you?
Soundcheck! I’m running a bit late. After that? Touring til the end of the year, shows in the Southeast, out to Texas, back to Atlanta and all the way up to Maine!
